ancient soap making

This picture shows a wooden box for making caustic lye, a first step towards modern soap technology.  The process involved running water through ashes in the box and boiling the solution with olive oil.

pioneer soap making

The word 'soap' comes from the Celtic word "Saipo".  The manufacture of soap by the hard-working colonists from wood ashes and waste fats give testimony to early American self-sufficiency and resourcefulness.  Soap's desirability and procurement wrote its own pages in the history of early America.

It is said of Queen Elizabeth I that she bathed once a month, "whether she needed to or not".  Before modern times, soap was a commodity only available to the wealthy.

Handmade Natural Habitante organic soaps are made in-house and in small batches that are carefully mixed, cured, cut and wrapped by hand.  Many herbs harvested from our very own garden are used in our recipes. Natural Habitante handmade soaps are pure, gentle and nourishing to your skin.  Although each bar is approximately 4.5 to 5 ounces, natural variances in size, shape and color are part of the uniqueness of our handmade soap.  We never use any animal or animal-tested products.

Chamomile Complexion Bar
Gentle complexion bar that softens, conditions and moisturizes older skin without clogging pores. Works as a soothing, healting antiseptic and astringent.  Scented with rose geranium, lavender, clary sage and lemon essential oils.

Citrus Scrub
A thorough but gentle scrubber.  A favorite with gardeners and others who work with their hands, including active children.

Cocoa Butter
This rich and creamy bar helps sensitive skin survive cold, dry winter air.  With no essential oils added, the chocolate aroma of the cocoa butter really comes through.  Not recommended for face because cocoa butter is comedogenic, meaning it can clog pores. Fragrance-free.

Cocoa Mint Creme
Minty chocolate swirls make this soap refreshing and moisturizing. A great wake-you-up soap!

Comfrey Complexion Bar
Specially made and so gentle for younger skin. A favorite among young women because of its antiseptic properties without causing dryness. Scented with pure essential oils of lemon and clary sage.
